In many situations, placing a loved one in an assisted living facility proves to be the perfect choice for their needed level of care. However, there are some seniors who require more attention and care that assisted living facilities simply cannot provide. A senior’s loved ones are often frustrated and unsure of what to do at this stage, but there are still solutions when assisted living just isn’t enough.
Continuing Care and Memory Care
If the needs of your loved one have outgrown a senior living community or an assisted living facility, there are other options available to consider. Depending on their specific needs or diagnoses, there are two different kinds of facilities that may help your loved one:
- Continuing Care Retirement Community – Continuing care, or lifetime communities, are unique facilities in that they offer different levels of care that can be adapted to the needs of each senior. These communities offer accommodations for assisted living and nursing home care, independent living, and a “continuum of care.” Seniors can spend the rest of his or her life in a continuing care community and move between the levels of care as needed. This type of facility or community is often called “aging in place” as their services and accommodations often evolve as the level of care progresses. As with any living arrangement, it is important to consider the services that are offered by the community to ensure that your loved one’s necessary level of care is offered.
- Memory Care Facilities – For those with memory problems and diseases, a memory care facility is the best option to fit their needs. Memory care communities have become the absolute best choice for those who are suffering from diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Memory care facilities cater to the specific needs of residents by featuring semi-private apartments or private rooms. These communities are normally located in a secured assisted living facility on a separate floor or wing with layouts that accommodate for wandering residents. Memory care facilities also feature specially trained staff members who are specifically trained in caring for those with memory problems.
