We perform our standard initial assessment then work with you to determine if memory care is the ideal fit for you or your loved one. Frequently Asked Questions

Memory care is a specialized form of assisted living focused on caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other neurological diseases. Memory care residents require specialized training and attention to meet their needs, incorporating activities designed to stimulate recall and maximize comfort. require assistance with everyday activities such as meals, medication management or assistance, bathing, dressing and transportation. Seniors or others with memory-related diseases including Alzheimer’s may require memory care, needing help with mobility, incontinence or other challenges. At Angels, we provide all of this and so much more for our residents in a loving home environment.

Dementia is the umbrella-term for a significant interference in daily life caused by loss of memory and other mental abilities starting from physical changes in the brain. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and accounts for approximately 60-80 percent of these cases, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Dementia is not a specific disease but rather an overall or general term that describes a vast array of symptoms. The symptoms can vary greatly as a result.

In general, at least two of the following mental abilities must be impaired in a significant way in order to be called dementia:

  • Memory
  • Communication and language
  • Reasoning and judgment
  • Ability to focus & pay attention, and
  • Visual perception.

Those with dementia could have problems with short-term memory, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, keeping track of everyday items such as a wallet, remembering their appointments, and everyday tasks, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

It’s best first to get a proper diagnosis from your physician if you suspect you or a loved suffers from dementia or Alzheimer’s. For informational purposes, the Alzheimer’s Association identifies the symptoms below:

  • Difficulty remembering recent conversations, names or events
  • Apathy and depression
  • Impaired communication
  • Poor judgment
  • Disorientation
  • Confusion
  • Behavior changes, and
  • Difficulty speaking, swallowing and walking.

Each of our facilities features an activities team to interact with residents in fun and unique ways. Our memory care facilities have specially trained staff who coordinate cognitive games with residents to exercise their memory and improve recall. Allowing residents to engage in chores or hobbies familiar to them helps them retain memories and familiarity. Other engaging activities include games like “Name This President” with flashcards to help residents with memory recall.

We also provide memory care residents with opportunities to engage in music and art, important parts of Alzheimer’s therapy according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Music therapy can shift mood, manage stress-induced agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function and coordinate motor movements. In fact, studies demonstrate that access to music can reduce certain behavioral issues like violent outbursts.

In our memory care units, we also have centers set up so residents can participate in and enjoy familiar activities such as baby care, cooking, vacation, sports, and playing with pets. Centers such as these are thought to increase memory recall.

Memory care costs a little more than traditional assisted living. Residents typically require a higher level of care. To accommodate memory care needs, we provide more staff who are specially trained to stimulate memory recall, manage safety, and provide security for each resident in their own way.

The national median monthly cost of assisted living (based on a private, one bedroom room) is $4,000, according to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care Survey. At Angels Senior Living, we offer rooms, including all services, in every price range starting from roughly $2,500 a month so that each and every senior, despite their economic situation, can join our family in a loving and nurturing atmosphere without having the financial worry and burden.

Our memory care facilities include a comprehensive security system with 24-hour surveillance, access control, coded entries and exits, and more to guarantee the safety of our residents. This doesn’t mean residents can’t go outside, however. We give residents the opportunity to spend time in interior courtyards to enjoy the outdoors, get a little sunshine, and garden.

Yes, although residents suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s may find their needs are best serviced in specifically designed areas called memory care. Residents’ quality of life can drastically improve in memory care when the need is there due to these diseases. Prior to admission at any Angels Senior Living community we would have a nurse assess your loved one to help determine which type of community would be best.
